Markets Update:
Asian stock markets traded mostly higher on Thursday, following broadly positive cues from Wall Street overnight. Technology stocks led the gains across the region, mirroring the strength seen on the tech-heavy Nasdaq. Markets in South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Indonesia posted notable advances, while investors also picked up stocks at relatively attractive levels after the recent sell-off. Asian markets had closed mostly lower on Wednesday.
The Australian market is trading modestly higher, recovering part of the losses from the previous session. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 moved above the 8,900 level, supported by gains in financial and technology stocks, though weakness in gold miners and energy stocks capped the upside. The index is up about 16 points, or 0.18 percent, at 8,917.20, while the broader All Ordinaries index is rising 0.25 percent to 9,140.20.
Among major miners, Mineral Resources and Fortescue posted gains, while BHP Group slipped. Oil stocks were mostly lower, with Santos, Beach Energy and Woodside Energy declining. In the technology sector, Block climbed more than 4 percent, Xero gained nearly 3 percent and Appen jumped over 8 percent, while WiseTech Global and Zip also surged.
Japan’s market rallied strongly, snapping a three-session losing streak, with the Nikkei 225 rising over 2.7 percent. Gains were broad-based across sectors, led by exporters, banks and technology stocks. Meanwhile, Wall Street ended Wednesday higher, with the Nasdaq leading gains, while crude oil prices also climbed.
